No matter how long we have lived, and no matter how much we think we know, we often experience times in life in which it feels like we know very little. These are moments when, especially, we understand how small we are and how vast the universe is.
This poem was inspired by one of those moments I experienced recently, and I hope it might be meaningful for you when you have those experiences, too.
“I Don’t Know”
I don’t know what tomorrow is like,
Or how I’ll die,
Or who’ll be president four years from now,
Or even If I’ll be able to do back bends in ten.
I don’t know how to handle grief,
To be a best friend,
To be an enemy,
Or even how to welcome Autumn.
I don’t know how poverty ends,
Or justice prevails,
Or goodness triumphs,
Or even what I will have for dinner tonight.
I don’t know how to be successful,
Or survive success wisely,
Or love well,
Or even take the sticky off the honey jar.
I don’t know how to honor people,
Or be joyful,
Or be kind sometimes,
Or even how much coffee is enough.
I don’t know much of anything
Except this moment right now,
A blanket I wrap around me,
And nestle down.
This moment is enough to know.
